J.Sikora, Aidas Cartridges, Doshi Audio, OePhi
This is a system built, quite simply, without compromise. An overused phrase maybe, but fitting when you consider the approach of each of the brands represented here. A statement analogue set up designed for the listener who wants nothing between themselves and the music. Where our first System Synergy curated an exceptional vinyl system at a considered price point, this configuration steps into rarer territory. It is built around a relationship that exists between these brands in the real world: J.Sikora and Doshi Audio have been partnered at international audio shows for years, and Janusz Sikora himself chose a full suite of Doshi electronics for his own listening room after hearing them together. That kind of endorsement — turntable designer to amplifier designer — speaks to a musical compatibility that goes deeper than specifications.
From the immense mechanical precision of the J.Sikora Standard Max, through the extraordinary artistry of the Aidas Mammoth Gold cartridge, into the hushed, tube-driven world of Doshi Audio’s Evolution electronics, and out through OePhi’s flagship Reference loudspeakers and cables, this system has been assembled with one aim: to get as close to the recorded event as the state of the art allows. This is a system for the devoted listener who views vinyl replay not as a hobby, but as a lifelong pursuit.
RRP from £28,200
The Standard Max sits at the heart of the J.Sikora range, positioned between the entry-level Initial and the flagship Reference. It is manufactured at the Allmet factory in Lublin, Poland — a facility that specialises in precision metal fabrication — and it draws on everything the company has learned about the relationship between materials, mass and resonance control.
At 83kg, this is a substantial piece of engineering. The chassis is machined from solid billet aluminium, but what sets the Standard Max apart from many high-mass designs is J.Sikora’s approach to material selection. Rather than relying on a single metal, the turntable uses no fewer than five different and carefully tuned materials in a sandwich arrangement. The 18kg platter is made from Delrin and cast iron, the subplatter from copper, aluminium and stainless steel, and a glass-crystal mat sits on top to further control vibrations. The platter rests on an inverted ceramic bearing — a hallmark of the J.Sikora design philosophy.
Two diametrically opposed DC motors, each driving the platter via rubber belts, balance the forces on the bearing and eliminate the asymmetric drag of a single-motor design. The result is exceptional rotational stability and the kind of jet-black background silence that allows the finest details in a recording to emerge. The Standard Max accommodates up to two tonearms and is available in silver or black finishes. Elaborately machined elliptical cutouts are CNC’d, while the rest of the turntable is handcrafted — a combination of modern precision and traditional skill that defines the J.Sikora approach.

The Mammoth Gold is the flagship of the Aidas range, and it is unlike any other cartridge in production. Its body is crafted from 21,000-year-old Siberian woolly mammoth tusk — a material that Aidas Svazas selected after extensive comparison with stones, exotic woods, metals, and even other bone and horn materials. Mammoth ivory proved far superior to all of them: denser, free of air bubbles, with fewer impurities, and possessing exceptional vibration-damping properties that translate directly into sonic purity.
This is the pinnacle of the AU series, meaning it uses pure 999-grade 24-karat gold coils — hand-wound by Aidas himself in his Kaunas, Lithuania workshop using specialised tools and techniques refined over more than two decades. The generator is a custom Mk2 design manufactured by Namiki in Japan, paired with an Adamant boron cantilever and MicroRidge stylus for outstanding tracking precision. The magnet system is AlNiCo5, the cartridge pins are 24K gold, output is 0.28mV, and the recommended tracking force is 1.9g.
The Mammoth Gold demands a phono stage of the highest calibre — which is precisely what follows in this system. In return, it offers a presentation that reviewers have consistently described as possessing remarkable tonal density, harmonic depth and a natural, unforced character. It does not impose its own signature on recordings; instead, it differentiates between them with rare clarity, revealing the unique character of each pressing rather than homogenising the sound.

Designed by Nick Doshi in Charlottesville, Virginia, the Evolution Phono Preamplifier represents the culmination of decades of circuit design rooted in a single philosophy: simplicity in the signal path, with no compromise in the power supply.
This is a two-chassis design, with the phono stage itself housed separately from its oversized power supply. The MC section uses a JFET-based differential head amplifier followed — unusually — by step-down transformers rather than the step-up designs more commonly found in phono stages. This novel approach accomplishes three things simultaneously: galvanic isolation, a reduction in impedance, and the elimination of ground-loop noise. The tube-based amplification section uses three dual triodes per channel, driving a passive RIAA equalisation circuit and delivering an output impedance low enough to work with any line preamplifier.
The Evolution revision brought a completely redesigned power supply with ultra-low-noise regulation, along with premium AudioCapX and ClarityCap capacitors that reduce distortion and improve transparency. Three inputs — one MC differential (available with RCA or XLR), and two MM — provide flexibility for multi-arm turntables. MC loading can be adjusted on the fly via remote control, with two memory positions for storing preferred settings. The chassis incorporates Doshi’s Three Stage Decoupling technology: point-to-point wired audio circuits are mounted on an isolated sub-chassis, suspended from a half-inch slab of laser-cut DuPont Corian, which is in turn mechanically decoupled from the 14-gauge non-magnetic stainless steel enclosure. The result is an environment of profound quiet from which the music emerges with startling naturalness.

The Evolution Line Preamplifier follows the same design principles as its phono stage sibling — minimal gain stages, zero negative feedback, and a fanatical attention to noise reduction and mechanical isolation.
A single ECC99 dual-triode vacuum tube per channel handles all amplification duties, delivering up to 12dB of gain. The transformer volume control provides galvanic isolation between source and amplifier — a significant advantage in maintaining signal purity — while the separate, oversized power supply ensures battery-like stability and an ultra-low noise floor. The Evolution revision reduced that noise floor by an order of magnitude compared to the already acclaimed V3 Preamplifier, thanks to redesigned regulation of the high-voltage supply, an improved transformer volume control, and a revised output transformer.
Four inputs, each configurable as either RCA or XLR, and two outputs provide comprehensive connectivity, while a Home Theater Bypass is included as standard. The aluminium constrained-layer top plate reduces airborne vibrations, and the same Three Stage Decoupling technology used throughout the Doshi range ensures that the delicate audio circuits remain isolated from both external and internal resonance. The supplied remote control provides discrete input selection, volume and mute. At 39lbs including the power supply, the Evolution Line Preamplifier is a physically substantial component whose build quality reflects its role as the nerve centre of a no-compromise system.

The Evolution Stereo Amplifier completes the Doshi electronics chain, and it is a uniquely conceived design. Where most hybrid amplifiers use a tube input stage and solid-state output, Doshi inverts the convention: a matched JFET differential input stage drives a tubed output section using four pairs of EL34 tubes — eight in total, four per channel.
This unusual topology achieves Nick Doshi’s core design goal: a powerful amplifier using only two gain stages and approximately 7dB of feedback. The result is 65 watts per channel into 5 ohms, with the first 50 watts delivered in Class A. The four-tube-per-channel configuration halves the output impedance, doubles the current capacity, and lowers dissipation in the tubes — extending their life while ensuring the amplifier can drive virtually any loudspeaker with ease and composure. Custom Sowter Audio output transformers, designed for continuous output in excess of 100 watts at 20Hz, prevent core saturation and contribute to the amplifier’s authoritative low-frequency performance.
Both RCA and XLR inputs are provided, with the single-ended RCA path preferred for the purest signal route. The chassis follows the same 14-gauge non-magnetic stainless steel construction and Three Stage Decoupling as the rest of the Evolution range. Every component is over-specified — what Doshi calls “Component De-Stressing” — to ensure reliability, longevity, and the lowest possible thermal noise. At 65lbs, with its eight glowing EL34s visible beneath chrome-covered transformers, the Evolution Stereo Amplifier is as beautiful an object as it is a musical instrument.

The Reference 3.5 is the ultimate expression of Joakim Juhl’s 25-year pursuit of loudspeaker design that adds nothing and removes nothing from the signal. This is OePhi’s flagship — a three-way floorstanding design that stands taller and reaches deeper than anything else in the range, and demands careful positioning to deliver its full potential.
The design uses Purifi woofers in a larger enclosure than the Immanence models below, allowing for lower dynamic compression and more extended bass. A dedicated midrange version of the Purifi driver features a lighter, faster voice coil, achieving distortion levels below -70dB — a remarkable figure that contributes to the speaker’s extraordinary transparency. The ribbon tweeter is substantially larger than that used in the Immanence line, contributing to a sensitivity increase of approximately 4dB and an effortless, extended high-frequency performance.
The crossover has been simplified compared to the Immanence — a counterintuitive approach that achieves near-perfect time domain performance. Every element of the design is focused on preserving the timing, phase coherence, and dynamic integrity of the signal. Handmade in Denmark using real wood veneer, with custom paint and bespoke finishes available on request, the Reference 3.5 is a loudspeaker that reveals everything upstream of it with absolute honesty — the ideal partner for a signal chain as refined as this one.

In a system of this calibre, the connections between components become critical. OePhi’s Reference cables represent the pinnacle of the company’s cable technology and share a design philosophy with the Reference 3.5 loudspeakers: to preserve the signal with the least possible interference.
The Reference range breaks significant new ground within OePhi’s lineup. The interconnects and digital cables use pure silver conductors, while the speaker and power cables use further-optimised copper — each suspended in OePhi’s signature cotton-damped air dielectric. What distinguishes Reference from the ranges below is the complete physical separation of conductors, achieved through solid Danish oak spacers placed at regular intervals along the entire length of each cable. This skeletal, open construction minimises the electromagnetic interaction between conductors and results in industry-leading bandwidth and vanishingly low time-domain distortion.
The terminations are designed specifically for the Reference range, using the softest and most conductive metals available — including in-house developed and manufactured pure silver banana connectors with at least 99.99% silver content. Interconnects start from £4,000 per metre, and loudspeaker cables from £3,595 per 1.5m pair. In this system, the Reference cables complete the signal path with the same uncompromising transparency that defines every component upstream.
