The Volcano Black is the newest addition to Acustica Applicata’s family of variable resonators—a device designed not simply to correct room acoustics, but to reveal the dimensionality already encoded in a recording. Where conventional treatments absorb or diffuse, Volcano actively tunes out the conflicting sound waves that cloud the musical picture.
In any listening room, loudspeakers generate energy fields that only partially reach the ear directly. Much of what we hear arrives delayed, having bounced off walls, floor, and ceiling, colliding and cancelling in ways that obscure the original signal. Volcano intervenes at the points of greatest turbulence—between the loudspeakers, along lateral walls, or behind the system—restoring clarity to what was always there but hidden.
The body is transparent Plexiglas, sealed at the summit by a black wooden cap shaped like a crater. This form is not decorative; the curved underside and crater geometry are essential to Volcano’s performance, refined through extensive prototyping and hundreds of hours of listening and measurement. At the base, a tunable cylinder inspired by the Tornavoz—a device used by early twentieth-century lute makers to enhance projection and low-frequency response—allows the resonant frequency to be adjusted by ear until bass depth and speed are maximised.
An internal membrane on a wooden frame, adjustable via an external knob, provides control over high-frequency diffusion. Oriented vertically it brings texture and sweetness to the treble; horizontally it adds body to the midrange. Most listeners find the optimal position somewhere between. The standard configuration stands 105cm tall with a 38cm diameter, effective down to 35Hz. For larger rooms or corner placement, an optional extension module lowers this to 25Hz.
The result is immediate and unambiguous: bass gains impact and depth, the soundstage expands in three dimensions, tonal balance improves, and dynamic contrasts become startling. Volcano does not change the character of a system—it simply lets the music breathe.
