The PSX-5.2 is Gold Note’s dedicated external power supply for the Series 5.2 range, evolved from the original PSU-5 with meaningful improvements to mechanical structure, power delivery and — most significantly — versatility. Its dual-output architecture allows two Series 5.2 components to remain permanently connected: one phono stage (PH-5 or PH-5.2) and one line-level source (CD-5, CD-5.2, HP-5.2 or DS-5.2). When activated, the full energy reserve is directed entirely to the selected component, ensuring uncompromised supply quality where it matters most. For any Series 5.2 owner, the PSX-5.2 represents the single most effective upgrade path available.

Foundational power for the 5.2 series

In a high-fidelity audio system, every component is only as good as the power it receives. Internal power supplies, however well designed, share chassis space with sensitive analogue circuitry and are constrained by the available physical footprint. An external supply removes those compromises, providing a dedicated, isolated source of clean, stable power with measurably lower noise.

The PSX-5.2 is built around a four-rail audio-grade power supply with two ultra-low-noise voltage regulators. Maximum output voltage variation is held to 0.05%, with line noise rejection and common mode noise rejection both exceeding 80 dB. Full power response time is under 2.5 microseconds, meaning the supply reacts effectively instantaneously to the dynamic demands of the connected component. Dynamic power delivery exceeds 60 W from a continuous consumption of 40 W, providing substantial headroom above the typical draw of any single Series 5.2 device.

What this means in practice is straightforward: a darker, quieter background from which fine detail and spatial information emerge more clearly. Bass gains firmness and definition. The high-frequency range relaxes. The overall presentation acquires a sense of composure and authority that the internal supply alone cannot fully deliver. These are not theoretical differences — they are consistently audible, and they affect everything from solo vocal recordings to large-scale orchestral dynamics.

The most notable advance over the PSU-5 is the dual-output architecture. The PSX-5.2 provides two dedicated outputs, allowing a phono stage and a line-level source to remain permanently connected via their respective PSU inputs. This eliminates the need to physically swap cables when moving between vinyl and digital playback. The supply directs its full energy reserve to whichever component is active, so there is no dilution of performance — each device receives the same dedicated, uncompromised power delivery it would get if it were the only unit connected.

Compatible components include the PH-5, PH-5.2, CD-5, CD-5.2, HP-5.2 and DS-5.2. For systems built around two or more Series 5.2 sources, the PSX-5.2 effectively upgrades the entire front end in a single step.

The chassis follows the Series 5.2 design language: black anodised sandblasted aluminium, chosen for its low interaction with magnetic fields. In a power supply, where transformers and regulators generate their own electromagnetic fields, minimising chassis-level interaction contributes to the overall quietness of the unit and prevents it from becoming a secondary source of interference for neighbouring components.

Power supply upgrades are sometimes viewed as the less exciting end of a system improvement. In practice, for any existing Series 5.2 owner, the PSX-5.2 is likely to deliver a more immediately apparent improvement than almost any other single change at a comparable outlay. It does not alter the character of the connected component — it simply allows it to perform closer to its full potential, with greater control, greater composure and less interference from the mains supply.
