BAT

The BAT is Acustica Applicata’s ceiling-mounted variable resonator—a device that addresses the most overlooked boundary in any listening room. While floor-standing treatments work at points of high pressure along walls and corners, the ceiling remains a vast reflective surface that colours every note. BAT brings the same tuneable resonator technology overhead, completing the acoustic picture.

Suspended from the ceiling on a slender mounting bar, BAT houses a transparent internal membrane that can be tilted relative to the horizontal and rotated on its vertical axis. These two degrees of freedom provide remarkably fine control over the soundstage. Tilting the membrane shifts the perceived central image forward or backward between the loudspeakers and the listening position; rotating the device when placed near corners proportionally widens the soundstage. The membrane angle also influences tonal balance and transient response—parallel to the ceiling yields the fastest, most natural transient decay, while progressive tilting adds energy to the mid-high frequencies. Matching these adjustments to the room and system unlocks results that no passive absorber or diffuser can achieve.

A single BAT positioned between the loudspeakers or above the listening point delivers immediate benefits. Additional units placed near the ceiling corners behind the speakers, behind the listener, or along the side walls extend control throughout the room. Each position targets a different aspect of the acoustic interaction, and multiple BATs can be tuned in concert for comprehensive treatment.

Installation is straightforward: two plugs and screws for plastered ceilings, or wood screws for slatted or timber-beaded surfaces. Once mounted, all adjustments are made by hand—no tools required. The result is a listening space transformed, where the ceiling no longer masks the music but participates in its presentation.

Suggested positions:

  • Position A: Centre of the imaginary line connecting the two loudspeakers
  • Position B: Above the listening point, shifted 40–50cm toward the speakers
  • Positions C: Ceiling corners behind the speakers (40–80cm from rear wall, 30–60cm from side walls)
  • Positions D: Ceiling corners behind the listening point (40–80cm from rear wall, 30–60cm from side walls)
  • Positions E: Ceiling area to the sides of the listening point (mid-length of side wall, 40–50cm from wall, or aligned with listening position)
